Columbia Powerlifting is a program affiliated with the THSPA. You can find all the information you need on the THSPA web site, including meet results and regional standings. Powerlifting involves a combination of team and individual work, along with Roughneck Pride and heart. Columbia has had a renowned powerlifting team for many years, and looks forward to continuing the tradition. Powerlifting consists on 3 lifts, Squat, Bench Press, and the Dead Lift. You get 3 attempts at each lift to try and get the highest total possible. Powerlifting is broken down into different weight classes to level out the competition, the classes consist of 114, 123, 132, 148, 165, 181, 198, 220, 242, 275, and SHW. The team with the highest overall point total will be declared the winner of that meet. Points are awarded to individual team members in each weight class as follows: 7 points for first, 5 for second, 3 for 3rd, 2 for 4th, and1 for 5th place.
Columbia is also home to the THSPA's highest total ever at the State Meet. Jordan "Bear" Barrett of Columbia High School in West Columbia has become the strongest lifter in Texas High School Powerlifting Association history with a grand total of 2,005 total pounds in the 2007 state meet; and, Barrett's lift smashed the 17-year-old record of 2,000 pounds set in 1991 by Olympic weightlifter Mark Henry, the self-proclaimed World's Strongest Man of World Wrestling Entertainment; moreover, Mr. Barrett's lift represents the highest total by any Division I, II, or III lifter in the 25-year history of powerlifting.
